This is not a blog about politics. It is a blog about leadership and inspiration (which, of course, is the same thing).
Like you, I have been watching the daily unfolding of the horrors of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I have not been shocked by Vladimir Putin—I already knew what to expect and Putin delivered: a toxic, predatory mixture of machismo, paranoia, cruelty, and egomania. No surprises there.
But I was totally unprepared for the lessons of leadership and inspiration from his adversary, Ukraine President, Volodymyr Zelensky. You have all seen his bravery, empathetic presence, measured and calm demeanor and an obvious, and loving, connection to Ukrainians. So, I will not write more about this as you have been watching the same reporting as I have. But let me leave this quote with you from President Zelensky’s 2019 inaugural address—what does it say to you about this man? Which traits of inspirational leadership does it suggest to you?
“I do not want my picture in your offices: the President is not an icon, an idol, or a portrait. Hang your kids’ photos instead and look at them each time you are making a decision.”
This clinic reminds me that Darkness is not a thing, it is the absence of a thing — Light.
Shining a light eliminates darkness — even a small candle can illuminate a dark cave.
Zelensky and many examples of Ukranian compassion, loyalty, and courage are examples of tremendous light that will eliminate the darkness. The world is inspired by them. One evil source of darkness has no chance against those united sources of brightness.
What a great insight, Joe. It reminds me of Martin Luther King Jr’s quote, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
Totally agree, Lance. He’s emphasizing that it’s not about him, it’s about a much bigger cause. His courage to lead from the frontlines is very inspiring. Contrast that with images of Putin 20 feet away from anyone at a big ornate table giving orders for others to die for his egomania.
Thanks for this Jim. The stance of President Zelensky is even more remarkable given the extraordinary imbalance between Ukraine and Russia in terms of weaponry. If spirit can overcome violence, this will be the ultimate case study!
