Try thinking of something that you do in your personal or professional life that is not comfortably contained within the one of these three descriptors: Mastery, Chemistry, or Delivery. These three are called the Primary Values.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span>The definition of the <\/span><strong>Primary Values <\/strong><span>is: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Mastery<\/strong><span>: <\/span><span><em>Undertaking whatever you do to the highest standards of which you are capable<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Chemistry<\/strong><span>: <\/span><em>Relating so well with others that they actively seek to associate themselves with you <\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Delivery<\/strong><span>: <\/span><em>Identifying the needs of others, and meeting them <\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>We achieve these three Primary Values by practicing the <\/span><strong>Accelerators<\/strong><span>, <\/span><span>which propel the Primary Values in this way: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<p><span><strong>Mastery is achieved through Learning<\/strong>, <\/span><span>defined as: <\/span><em>Seeking and practicing knowledge and wisdom <\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Chemistry is achieved through Empathizing<\/strong><span>, defined as: <\/span><em>Considering the thoughts, feelings, and perspectives of others, <\/em>and<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Delivery is achieved through Listening<\/strong><span>, defined as<\/span><span>: <\/span><em>Hearing and understanding the communications of others <\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span>These last three <\/span><span>are called \u201cAccelerators<\/span><span>,<\/span><span>\u201d <\/span><span>because they accelerate the Primary Value with which they are linked. For example, to achieve <\/span><em>greater <\/em>Mastery, we need to commit to greater Learning. We call this combination Values-centered Leadership\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Achieving Mastery, Chemistry, or Delivery cannot be achieved by wishful thinking alone. There are concrete actions and steps that we can each take that, when purposely applied, will lead to the enhancement and growth of these three Primary Values. To achieve greater Mastery, we must engage in new Learning. Similarly, if we wish to build greater Chemistry with people, we must first Empathize with them. And meeting the needs of others<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Delivery<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">is best achieved by Listening for those needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span>These six little words are incredibly powerful because they propel all human progress, innovation, relationships, and achievements. There is nothing in the world that we cannot accomplish if we <\/span><em>learn <\/em><span>something new that leads to greater <\/span><em>Mastery, empathize <\/em><span>with others that leads to greater <\/span><em>Chemistry <\/em><span>or <\/span><em>listen <\/em><span>to the needs of others to achieve greater <\/span><em>Delivery<\/em><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3><span>The Vector <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>It is possible, (but not essential), to assign numerical values to these <\/span><span>questions. For example, you might ask, \u201cHow do you feel about your Mastery today?\u201d You might get an answer such as, \u201cIt feels like around a <\/span><span>10 <\/span><span>for me today.\u201d You might respond, \u201cWhat about your Learning?\u201d and the <\/span><span>respo<\/span><span>nse might be, \u201cIt really feels like a 6 today.\u201d Hidden in these responses is a magic formula we call \u201cthe Vector,\u201d which the dictionary <\/span><span>defines as <\/span><span>\u201c<\/span><span>a quantity possessing both magnitude and direction.<\/span><span>\u201d <\/span><span>If you subtract the Primary Value (in this case Mastery at 10) from the Accelerator (in this case Learning at 6), the resulting number is -4. One could go further: the current level of Mastery cannot be sustained by this lesser level of Learning because the lower power of Learning will lead to an ultimate decline in Mastery. In our different roles across all aspects of our lives<\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span>at home, or at work<\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span>as leader, coach, artisan, spouse, parent, friend, or anything else<\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span>we can use this formula<\/span><span>\u2014 <\/span><span>the Vector<\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span>to guide us into a valuable conversation, an <\/span><strong>inspiring check- in<\/strong><span>: \u201cWhat do you think you need to learn in order to achieve greater Mastery?\u201d Notice that this is a nonjudgm<\/span><span>ental, noncritical, conversational exchange designed to inform both parties and enable them both to grow<\/span><span>\u2014 <\/span><span>based on questions, not judgments or lectures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<h3><span>Interpreting the Vector <\/span><span>\u2013 <\/span><span>The Inspiring Check-in <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span>The Vector is a forward indicator. This makes it very different from most assessment tools which are usually snapshots of history, looking back over six or 12 months, for example (backward indicator). On the other hand, the Vector takes account of the current situation (a Mastery level of 10 in the above example), recognizing that the current situation is simply the result of the past, and, at the same time, acknowledges that we are equally interested in the future. Furthermore, in the example above, the negative Vector of -4 predicts a future where there are insufficient levels of Learning to propel current levels of Mastery. Since the Vector is negative, it is also signaling a future decline of Mastery. This can result in a rich opportunity for deep and constructive conversation<\/span><span>\u2014<\/span><span>an <\/span><strong>inspiring check-in<\/strong><span>.
