The Real Definition of Winning

I really don’t know much about baseball. But I love elegance and grace, and inspiring people and moments. It doesn’t interest me who wins – or even if anyone wins – but who showed grace and elegance; who was inspiring and inspired others; who modeled the values we need to see more of in this world if we are to make it a better place. Of course, I would have loved to see the Colorado Rockies do better, but weren’t they inspiring, weren’t they a surpise and didn’t they make your heart race? Weren’t they a marvelous example of courage and leadership? In reality, their presence in the World Series was an impudence, but didn’t they carry it off with panache? You see, in the end, the old cliche about how it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game, is really true. The real definition of winning is, “Going as far as you possibly can, using everything you’ve got”. Both teams modeled that beautifully for us in the World Series this year.
