In the mid 1990s, my wife Tricia and I were captivated by the magic of a place called Hollyhock, a 115-acre piece of paradise – a sacred, lush rain forest on a remote island, in the Pacific Northwest, with gorgeous beaches, fresh water, long walks and fabulous food. 1998 was the last time we taught there together, something we rarely do even in the best of times because our schedules are so busy.But this year we are going back again – we just couldn’t resist Hollyhock’s charms – from June 25th. to June 29th.
Tricia and I are going to teach a group of leaders, coaches, trainers and executives how to become more inspired and how to be even more inspiring to others – in other words, how to live a more inspiring life and create more inspiring organizations. A lot of people talk about discovering one’s calling in life which is only conceptual knowledge. Yours is one of the few books which actually has working knowledge of how to achieve it. Work forms a major part of waking life and therefore that part simply has to be fulfilling and satsiffying for discontent not to permerate in other areas of life.
Having written articles on the subject which have appeared in India’s best spiritual magazines, I feel that what you are doing should actually be taught in schools and colleges so that the students are not caught totally unawares when they start working. Why should anybody have to go back to school after discvoering that he has the wrong qualifications? If the talent is there, it can be brought out(literal meaning of the word education) without obsession with too much formal education though that would depend on the nature of calling. Practical courses should be designed to train these people in the fastest possible time instead of extreme measures like going back to school.
India has the largest movie industry in the world. There is one movie about a person going into a negative spiral of destruction on not beng able to marry his lady love. Though this movie has been made nine times, there is no movie on the moment to moment misery of people in the wrong profession. One has to spend three times the amount of time on one’s occupation than with one’s spouse and therefore the torture is even more acute. If such a movie is ever made, it can create awareness amoung the younger generation what can happen when they do not follow their calling and base thier career choices on extrinsic factors. This is too important a decision to be left for impressionable minds to make by themselves. I sincerely hope that you have made some headway in the matter.
