It would not be an overstatement to say that the world feels a little challenging for many – and even downright frightening for some. And yet things always right themselves eventually – if we act. But that is the issue – ACTING, taking steps that we would not have done otherwise.
I read recently about a recorded talk given by the late Ram Dass, in which he asks the question, “How do you open the heart?” His answer? “You start to love that which you can love, and just keep expanding. You love a tree, you love a river, you love a leaf. You love a flower, you love a cat, you love a human. But go deeper and deeper into that love, until you love that which is the source of the light behind all of it.”
Can I do that? Can you? At this early time in the year, when we traditionally tend to resolve to do better in various parts of our lives, can we make the world feel better by loving more? Could many of us loving more make a difference? If we want change, we need to ACT – if we love more, we will change the world.
Is this a challenge you would be willing to pick up? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Help me understand what does Ram Das and you mean by “love”?
Great question, Dario. My definition is, “Relating to others by touching their hearts in ways that add to who we both are as persons.” But also it simply means having an open, welcoming and compassionate heart towards others – people, nature, institutions and more. Or as St. Thomas Aquinas described love, “Willing the good of the other”. Perhaps there are endless ways to describe love, which includes kindness, generosity, forgiveness and so much more? How would you describe love, Dario?
