For many years the Secretan Center has been deeply concerned about and engaged in protecting the environment. All our books, DVDs and CDs are manufactured using recycled materials, soy-based inks and environmentally sensitive shipping materials. We have leveraged our website to replace all traditional uses of paper in our business and nearly all data collection is directed through our website. We have been strong supporters of the “Make Poverty History” Campaign since its inception.
Recently, our team has been considering how to make our companyÃs presence completely C02-neutral. There are a number of sites that specialize in helping organizations achieve “zero footprint” status and this would be our aim. Such sites include The Conservancy Fund and another is Zero Footprint.
Our current thinking is leading towards adding a nominal amount to each order placed by a customer to help offset the material costs of the item as well as the costs of shipping, packing, travel and so on. Here is an example of this approach.
To assist us in our discussion, we would love to hear your thoughts about how to make this customer-friendly, how you would like to see us implement this strategy and any experience or advice you may have for us. Please post your suggestions as a reply to this blog. Thanks for being our partners.
Excellent idea – not just another “shipping and handling” charge but a real action that maps directly to the purpose at hand. I think that more companies should do this. It is an excellent way to bring a direct correlation between the activity and the impact.
The only improvement I would suggest is if possible make it both a line item product – as a way to offset more than just your order here – and as an option in the shipping section of the shopping cart application.
Thanks for a brighter moment in my day.
