Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it.
From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse. But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing.
Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind. His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.
This alone is amazing.
If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell. Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field. Attached to the horse’s halter is a small bell. It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.
As you stand and watch these two friends, you’ll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse, and that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk to where the other horse is, trusting that he will not be led astray.
When the horse with the bell returns to the shelter of the barn each evening, it stops occasionally and looks back, making sure that the blind friend isn’t too far behind to hear the bell.
Like the owners of these two horses, God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect or because we have problems or challenges. He watches over us and even brings others into our lives to help us when we are in need.
Sometimes we are the blind horse being guided by the little ringing bell of those who who have been placed in our lives.
Other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way.
Good friends are like that – you may not always see them, but you know they are always there.
Please listen for my bell. And if you are the one wearing the bell, then I’ll listen for yours. |And remember – be kinder than necessary. It is inspiring.

Hi Lance,
I liked that story very much. I used to ride a lot and certainly know of the loving and trusting nature of horses. I have a similar story.
A young jockey at a Point to Point meet was asked by an old country trainer to ride his mare in the next race. The trainer said she would jump well but told the young fella to count down the strides from 3 out and then say jump as they approached the fence. The jockey thought that a little odd but said that was fine with him. As they started the race the mare was well placed coming into the first jump and the jockey forgot the count down, the mare ploughed right through the jump and nearly lost her jockey. On the next jump he did count down from three strides our 3,2,1, JUMP! She flew it and the rest of the way round he counted down. She didn’t win but placed.
When he got back to the enclosure he told the trainer what happened and asked why the count down. Oh, he said she’s been blind for years but is a good racer and seem to love it!!!
Amazing how trusting some animals are of humans!!!
Hope you both are having a wonderful time, we are off south next Wednesday and back early April.
Take care
P
This is a wonderful story and so true about our lives. Thank you for sharing it and ringing this reminding/rehearting bell for us all.
Lance,
Thank you so much for sharing this. It brought tears to my eyes.
It reminded me of how simple kindness can open our hearts.
With gratitude,
Brad
NAMASTE!
Hi Lance,
What a great story.
This past year I went through a very difficult emotion time due to the ending of a relationship. At the same time I was actively working on cleaning up my past conditioning (baggage).
Being open to the help of my friends through all this provocation was vital. There was one friend who I called often to get me through the most emotional pieces. Her help was invaluable.
This fall I had the opportunity to pay this gift forward for a friend who was in the eye of the storm of his own emotional transformation. It was a huge pleasure for me to be able to open my heart and provide him with help and unconditional love.
I am grateful to those that wear a bell and I am very pleased that I evolved to a place where I could wear my own bell.
